I COULD DO THAT
Curated by Kenny Schachter
April 16 - May l2, 1994
Reception Sat. April 16, 6-8
Hours: Tues. - Sun. 10-7
I COULD DO THAT is the latest in a series of group shows organized
by Kenny Schachter in temporary sites, dedicated to providing
venues for emerging artists. The exhibition, scheduled for April 16
through May 12, 1994, will include paintings, sculptures, videos and
installations by 14 artists.
In September of last year, Morley Safer railed against contemporary
art in the infamous segment of 60 Minutes entitled, "Yes ... But Is
It
Art? " After a set-up intended to bash Basquiat, Safer queried a
group of children whether they could better Basquiat's "childishly
wrought graffiti" (to which they resoundingly responded in the
affirmative). This show will examine the hackneyed response of
armchair art critics and other assorted philistines when they
encounter art that is unfamiliar: Pff... That's not art. I could do that!
