Looky Loo
PRESS RELEASE
The Sculpture Center is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition
"Looky Loo," scheduled for April 1 - April 30, 1995. The group
show is comprised of sculptures and videos from seven artists of divergent
sensibilities and backgrounds.
The Webster definition of rubbernecking is "looking, staring or listening
with excessive curiosity, or an inquisitive person." Looky loo, the
vernacular version, connotes the fascination with the urge to view the lives
of others, especially those experiencing misfortunes. Undeniably, people
are drawn into the position of spectator in situations that may not warrant
looking on. And, while staring or listening with excessive curiosity can
seem a beneficial and essential posture, it is easy enough to imagine heightened
scrutiny inflicting havoc. Nevertheless, who does not, on occasion, marvel
at the peculiar and strange ill luck that befalls members of the public?
The work in this show will in some way reflect the diverse manners of stimulation
generated by visual means.
The exhibition is to be curated by Kenny Schachter, an independent curator,
artist and lecturer. In conjunction with WBAI FM radio, a panel discussion
will be scheduled during the show, and simultaneously broadcast from the
Sculpture Center.
