There is a flurry of activity to codify definitions that neatly
characterize the social, political and economic movements of our
time. With the end of the century fast approaching, the frenzy to
attempt to categorize the prevailing moods accelerates.
Countless self-proclaimed prognosticators are holding their
fingers into the winds to catch the latest trend; and, a
fractured mishmash of competing theories is the result. Why do
so many feel the need to pigeonhole everything into convenient
packages? A race to portend the demise of one -ism, and signal
the coming of the next paradigm is well underway. This show
reflects that myriad interpretations as to what defines present
artistic production can coexist. The exhibition will highlight
some of the diverse concerns and issues motivating a cross-
section of emerging artists today.

Paintings, sculptures, video works, and installations from 12
artists will be exhibited. "Shooting Blanks" will occupy a former
gallery at 81 Greene Street for a period of two months (September
1 - October 31, 1993). During that time, the space will be open
tuesday through sunday and operated as a gallery/cafe, with a
program of performances scheduled. 10% of the art proceeds
will benefit Hale House for Infants.
